Common Dental Implants Questions
Have you had, or are you considering, dental implants? If so, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, our dental experts will go through common questions our patients have about this incredible treatment, which we regularly perform here at our dental practice in Wakefield, so you have ultimate peace of mind.
Of course, it helps to set the scene – especially if you’ve not heard of the treatment. Put simply, dental implants in Pontefract can help restore your smile through a false tooth that’s actually screwed into the jaw. It looks and acts like a natural tooth. Now to the questions…
1. Are dental implants painful?
An anaesthetic is always used for patient comfort and consideration during this procedure. The process involves making a small incision in the gum, screwing in a small dental implant, then adding the crown part when it’s healed. At the beginning of the healing process, you may experience some pain, but you should be able to manage this with over-the-counter pain relief.
In terms of side-effects, expect some mild pain, swelling and possibly bruising for around a week after treatment. You can read about Dental Implant Aftercare here.
2. How successful is treatment?
It’s estimated that around 90-95% of dental implants are successful. With proper care afterwards, you can expect your new tooth to last a lifetime. Certain factors may affect the success rate of the tooth implant, for instance if you are a smoker (which is known to inhibit healing).
3. Who is suitable for dental implants?
Most adults over 18 will be eligible, subject to a consultation. However, in cases of bone loss or gum disease, there might not be enough bone or tissue for the tooth implant to fuse to and either additional treatment is needed, or the procedure won’t be right for you.
4. How long does treatment take?
It can vary, but usually it takes a few months. This is because healing time is needed in between the root part being placed, and the crown being fitted over the top of your new tooth.
5. Can I have more than one dental implant?
Absolutely. In fact, they can be used for multiple missing teeth, as well as all teeth being missing. They can be a great alternative to other treatments, such as bridges and dentures, as they’re fixed in place. You can read about the advantages of treatment in our previous post.
