Composite Bonding FAQ
We’re proud to offer a range of dental treatments here in Wakefield, with our expert team and cosmetic dentists carrying out everything from the everyday (think fillings) to the extra special (think perfectly whitened smile). Our dental practice is passionate about teeth that are healthy and strong, as well as being bright and beautiful. So, in this post, our experts will talk through composite bonding, answering common questions about the process.
What does composite bonding involve?
It’s a quick and easy three-step process that helps chipped teeth and fractures in the teeth, as well as covering smiles that have very small gaps, or teeth that have become discoloured. Following an assessment – so we can ensure you’re suitable – you can expect:
1 – preparation of the tooth – This involves shade matching the colour to blend in with the rest of your teeth.
2 – application and shaping of the composite resin – Your dentist will prepare the surface of the tooth and applies a bonding agent before adding the resin and moulding it to the right shape.
3 – UV hardening of the composite – This solidifies the composite.
How do I know if I’m suitable for treatment?
Really, it depends on the outcome of your assessment. It might be that the cracks or chips require an alternative method, such as a crown or porcelain veneers. Or, you may need the tooth extracting, depending on its condition. Our dental practice ethos is to try to save and enhance your natural teeth, where possible. Also, if you have decay on the tooth (a cavity), dental bonding may not be recommended. At Ropergate Dental Care & Implant Studio in Pontefract, we will work with you to devise a treatment plan to suit your individual needs.
Does the process hurt?
No, you shouldn’t feel any pain, though you may feel pressure on the tooth during the process.
Are there any drawbacks to composite bonding?
We’re always honest with our patients, and inform you of any risks, side-effects and drawbacks to any of our treatments. With composite bonding, your new tooth may be a little more susceptible to staining, so keep an eye on your diet and lifestyle, and try to cut down on anything that may discolour your teeth (such as drinking red wine or smoking).
It’s also important to bear in mind that it is possible for the composite to chip or break as a natural tooth might, for instance if you have habits like chewing ice or eating hard sweets, or from an accident such as playing contact sports.
How long does treatment take?
Most times, the process can be carried out in a single appointment, and normally won’t take more than an hour.
How do I look after my teeth in the future?
Composite bonding doesn’t make your teeth any more difficult to look after, however as stated, some chewing habits (ice, pens, nail-biting, hard sweets) could damage the material and affect your results.
It’s also important to keep brushing and flossing twice a day (two minutes a time) and keep an eye on those staining diet and lifestyle factors.
How much does the treatment cost?
It depends on the number of teeth you’re treating. Visit our pricing page for the latest information on costs.
