Which Teeth Replacement Treatment Is Right For Me?
Teeth replacement is something we do regularly here in Pontefract – and our patients are amazed at the results we can achieve. If restorative dental work is something, you’re in need of, then read on – we’re sharing various teeth replacement treatments on our blog today, which can help give you your smile back.
Why replace missing teeth?
Let’s first answer this common question – why is it important to even replace your lost teeth? Well, there are lots of reasons. Firstly, your bite and chew function might be affected, which has an impact on your diet. Secondly, you might not feel confident about your smile. And thirdly, if you choose not to replace your teeth, you could suffer from gum and jawbone recession, as well as your remaining teeth shifting in your mouth. On the flip side, replacing your missing teeth can give them better support; enable you to eat a normal diet; promote good levels of oral health; and even support the structure of your face, combatting sagging skin and signs of ageing.
What treatments are available for tooth loss?
The primary treatment we’d recommend – which is a permanent solution – is dental implants. These are fixed false teeth that are surgically implanted into the underlying structure of the jaw and gum through a minimally-invasive procedure. This gives the new tooth (or teeth) an incredibly strong foundation that could last a lifetime with proper oral care. Dental implants are available for one tooth, several teeth in a row (bridges) or both sets of teeth (dentures).
How do dental implants work?
A small incision is made into the gum so that the implant can be carefully and gently screwed into place. After this heals, a porcelain crown is fitted to complete the tooth. For bridges, two dental implants anchor a false crown in the middle. And for dentures, anchor points are placed around the mouth for support.
What about traditional dentures and bridges?
These are still an option; however, they likely won’t last as long and don’t provide the same level of support. Sometimes, patients find that these ‘slip’ in the mouth, for example.
